My daughter just turned thirteen and got a new iPhone for her birthday. I’m nervous. Not so much about the $400 phone, but because of what she can do with it ... and what can be done to her.
Did I mention she’s thirteen? A teenager? A teenage girl? A pretty teenage girl? Soon every boy and their sick, perverted uncle will be leering at her—and the fact that she will probably make a bad decision and post selfies of herself on her favorite sites makes me sick to my stomach. Of course I had the talk with her. The one about the birds and the bees. And believe me, I’ve had the other talk about the dangers of the Internet and how one bad decision can last a lifetime in the digital world. But you just know that she’s going to do something foolish at some point and you won’t be able to take it back.
That’s the problem with the Internet. Everything you say or do on it is there forever. It’s the perfect venue for exploiting the mistakes of the young and naïve.
My wife and I have raised a good girl, but even good girls do bad things. Foolish things. Boys do too—don’t get me wrong! I know. I’m just talking about my experiences and concerns involving my daughter. I’ve been on the Internet. I’ve seen LOADS of pictures of girls and porn. Hey, I’m human. And I’ve been on social media. I’ve seen plenty of unsolicited pictures of young girls in sexy poses and bikinis and undergarments. Teens today don’t think twice about what they post—and that scares me. I need to be realistic and assume that my little girl will do something like that someday and prepare myself for it. But I tell you, I’m not going to just sit idly by and let it happen.
